Mde file creation problem

I can't seem to create de MDE file with access 2000

My code compiles fine but still I get the access message
Microsoft access can't create mde file...

I have a large number of ODBC links to tables from SQL server 2000
could that be the problem?

Any help would be appreciated...

thanks
