Access won't open file

A2003.

I haven't seen this before. You use File/New to create a new database in
Access and call it DB1. Close Access, click on db1, Access opens and there's
nothing there. Then I try opening the database from File/Open, actually open
the file, and there's nothing there. No database window or anything.

No new software has been installed on the computer. There are other
databases that won't open either by clicking them or from file/open. It is
the full, not the run-time version.

I am thinking that Access needs to be re-installed, but with all the
licensing stuff MS does I don't know if that's a good idea. Assume I do
re-install. Do you un-install and re-install? Or is there a repair feature.

(This is on a computer to which I don't have access & am working with
somebody over the phone.)

Thanks,

Mike

Have you accidentally changed the start-up options to not display the
database window? Go to Tools - Start-up and make sure the option "Display
database window" is checked.

Alternatively, try holding the shift key when opening the database. That
will bypass all start-up options.

try looking at the menu

window-->unhide (alt+w-->u) to see if the database window is simply
hidden.

It seems to not open the database and, because of that, startup is grayed
out. A re-install didn't fix the problem either.

Hmmmm... no, tried all that. Something, somewhere on the drive glitched -- a
single bit of information changed from a 1 to a 0 or a 0 to a 1 and... the
damn computer is now a piece of junk that needs expensive service.

I dunno. Maybe a system restore will do the trick. Its probably reformat the
hard drive time.

You can try help--> Detect and Repair first.

Can you open the db1 file on another computer?
