2 access 97 databases how to

I have 2 access 97 databases.

database1 reads a bunch of ascii files and
if they are new it reads them in and updates
its files.
database2 links to the tables in database1, on open
of the switchboard. It deletes its table entries and relinks
to database1.

database2 has all the forms in it.

how can database2 tell database1(that is not running)
to check for new files and update (these modules are working ok)
and then link to the tables ?
I have never tried to give remote commands to another database.
I would assume that you just open the database and call the correct
module that does it.

Can I check for table updates before relinking?
I think I can do that.

thanks for any help

You can use the SHELL statement with the command line for starting the
database... which includes options to execute a particular macro at startup.
If the only time you expect to open this database is for this purpose, you
can just go to Options on the Menu and set the Start Options to open a Form
with the appropriate code in its Open event.

Ok that was easy.
I used a shell command and opened the database.
I set the database to open a form and autorun on open all the scripts.

One last quesion.
IF I do this and then add a close to the end, then no one can use the database
as normal because on open runs scripts and shuts down.
Can I pass it a second command to shutdown or how should I close the database
after the scripts are complete?

thanks again for your help

When you don't want the code to run open the file while holding the shift

Well now they like it the way it is.
it keeps the people from poking it and seeing what it does and maybe deleting
something.

I have one other question.
I run a shell to update the files.
then I relink the tables.
IF the shell takes tooo long to run, won't the relink crash?

this is set to run on the switchboard open.
call the shell to update the other database and shut it down on complete.
then to link the tables.
what should I do to MAKE SURE that everything is read in and all scripts are up
to date, and the database has shutdown, BEFORE relinking the tables.
