Problem saving memo field using timer

In A2000 I have a table containing a memo field. There is an unbound
form for entering text, and there can be lots of it. When the form
opens there is a function to grab the data from the table and enter it
into the field. There is another function to save the data back to the
table. There is also a timer running to save the data every 10 seconds.

All works well except very occasionally, especially when there is a lot
of data, the user gets an error 3118, 'Could not update; currently
blocked out by another session on this machine'.

It doesn't happen often and has been difficult to diagnose, but I have
worked out that it appears to only happen if the user is typing at the
point where the timer triggers the save function. Once it has occurred,
it seems to leave the data somehow corrupted and the error message
reapppears every 10 seconds, even if they close the form and re-open
it.

I would be grateful for any information about this, and how to solve
it, apart from removing the timer !!

For example, is there a way I could do the save only if there was no
keyboard activity.

Thanks for your help
Dave
