Hello,
Over the past 8 years, I have created an application for a scouting camp
site in the Netherlands. With this application, we keep track of all groups
camping on our site, number of persons, the pitches they camp on, etc.
It helps us to communicate in our organisation by sending e-mails to the
warden (about the expected groups for the weekend) and generating letters,
invoices, reports, graphs, etc.
This application has proven itself extremely useful, and now runs at nearly
ten campsites in the Netherlands.
European contacts showed that other sites are interested to use it too.
People from Denmark, Belguim, Germany, etc. want to try using it too.
Probably many more when they see it. For this, I included a module that
translates all screens, captions, menus, etc in any desired language. It
seems to work, but the thing is growing too big for one person to maintain
and change.
I am looking for members of scouting (in Europe, but not necessarily) who
want to help me in developing this. Perhaps in an open source way such as
Linux development.
Key to the success of this application is knowledge of camp site management
and of Scouting in general. This is what I look for in people who will want
to help me. I used it myself to grow a deep knowledge of Access, and I have
now started my own business using that knowledge. This experience is the
reward for helping.
Things that still need to be done are:
- reorganising the databases so that other people can understand what's
happening (i.e. removal of unused code and unused options)
- Changing the system of automatically linking (pre-installed Dutch)
scouting groups.
- Creating a run-time version of it so that non-access users can also use
this application
and possible future extensions such as an automated update to a web-site
showing availability during camping seasons.
Any volunteers for this ?
[ the application can be viewed -in Dutch- from the website
www.bieslandsebos.nl, click on the scouting logo (bottom-left) and scroll to
the bottom of the page to see two zip-files ]
Thanks in advance,
Bas Hartkamp.
