Set security for only ONE Access database

I am using Access XP (Access 200 available also if that makes any
difference), and am trying to set up security for one (and only one)
Access database, but each time I do that every Access database on my
computer starts prompting for username and password.
How do I set security for just the one database?

TIA

Hi Phil.

Sounds like you've used the default 'system.mdw' file to secure your app.
What you need to do is create a custom mdw file (using the Workgroup Admin
utility) and use the path to it as a shortcut command line switch.

You'll also need to re-create the default 'system.mdw'.

Your best best would be to:
1 - re-name and re-locate your existing 'system.mdw';
2 - re-create (the now missing) 'system.mdw' (I believe Access XP will do
this by default if it is missing);
3 - create a shortcut for your app with a command line similar to:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\msaccess.exe"
"X:\MyPath\MyGUI.mdb" /wrkgrp "X:\MyPath\MySecurity.mdw"

where MySecurity.mdw is your re-named System.mdw

Have you read the MS FAQ at
<http://support.microsoft.com/default...ss/content/sec
faq.asp> ? It's essential reading to set up security correctly.

There's also a step-by-step example on my web site (remember to work on
copies of your files!).

you're probably altering the system.mdw workgroup file, or whatever it's
called. And that's the one that access tries to open every access database
with, unless you tell it otherwise.

You'll need to create a separate .mdw file for the database you want to
secure, and use that when you're opening that database.

Database files don't prompt for UserNames and Passwords, Workgroup files do.
If when you made a separate Workgroup file to secure your app with you also
told the wizard to make it your default Workgroup then that is why you are
always prompted.

Just change your default workgroup back to the unsecured System.mdw and use
a command line argument to specify the secured Workgroup file only when
opening the file that you want secured.
