Guide to development process for clients?

I think I'm about to start another db development job at a place I work at
part time, doing something else.

As usual, there's a few spreadsheets kicking about and clients might think
that a database is a bit like that but a bit more organised, therefore a few
hours work.

Has anybody got any URLs for decent guides to how it works, to explain to
clients. You know:

User reqs
ER Modelling
Logical Modelling
Implementation

etc. and why those things are important and take time.

I like the intro to Developer's Handbook as a start - just because they
explain some of that and it's easy to follow. In my opinion (and it's
just an opinion), having all the information in front of you before you
start is important. then you can develop a phased plan from there.
Determine what's most important from a business/functionality
perspective and go from there.
