Vary gap widths in report charts (ACC2000)

I'm working with an Access 2000 report that displays a number of bar
charts. The charts tend to have 1 to 5 bars on them, but occasionally
there is a chart with about 20 bars. Because of these variations, using
a consistent gap width for all the charts doesn't yield the most
attractive results. Here's how I have attempted to get around this...

Private Sub <hdr>_Format(Cancel as Integer, FormatCount as Integer)
With <graph>.Object
If .Application.datasheet.cells(6, 1) <> "" Then
..GapDepth = 50
Else
..GapDepth = 150
End If
End With
End Sub

The intent is to test whether a given chart has fewer than 5 bars. If
so, it will not have data in cell (6,1) on the datasheet. That
condition appears to be testing correctly when I step through the
report (although I wish there were a more elegant way to test it). The
issue I'm having is, the GapDepth value doesn't actually get
reassigned. Any suggestions?
