Change how a Lookup Value is stored

MJ
One of my tables has a lookup field in it. It looks up a part number
but stores it as the part's name (bad idea). How can I change it back
to storing the part number as a part number without having to re-do the
table?

Add a new field to the table: PartID.
Run an Update query to populate it with the corresponding PartID for
the PartName value.
Delete the PartName field.

I have never done an Append within the same table--appending records
from one field into another. How would that be done?

I said Update, not Append.
Put the main table and the lookup table on the query design surface.
Delete any jon lines. Create a join between the two text fields.
The lookup's ID value needs to be stored in the main table's new
field.
