FREEware Access 97 mdb readers available?

MLH
I would like to use a utility that can read tables
inside an Access 97 mdb file. Writing not necessary.
No other objects need to be readable - only tables.
Anybody know of a freeware utility?

No, haven't heard of one. It would certainly be possible to write one,
because the Jet database engine and the ADODB data provider are freely
available for use with various Microsoft and other programming languages --
but I am not aware that anyone _has_ done so.

You can save reports in "snapshot format" and use a free reader downloable
from Microsoft to view _those_, but I doubt that would be much help for you.

An inexpensive leftover or used copy of Access 2002 may be your best bet.
Check the online auction sites.

There's MDAC and VBScript.

You should be able to connect into an Access database through oledb
and read the tables. While you're at it export them to xml or some
other format so you don't have to worry about it in the future.

If you can't get that to work, try freeware or trial version report
writers.

Does a mail merge with an Access mdb require that Access be installed (I
have no PC without Access to test this on)?

Should have said: "mail merge from MS Word".

You could try: http://www.pablovandermeer.nl/body_mdb_2_xml.html

I've never used it before but you could always give it a go.

Microsoft Word has support for accessing "Access" (Jet database engine
databases, builtin), using either Microsoft Query or VBA code, if that is
what you need. Using VBA code and Microsoft Forms, you could create an
application and UI with Word that creates, updates, deletes from a Jet
database, then uses the data in Word documents. I have not implemented such
Word applications, because I am an "Access developer" not a "Word developer"
but they certainly can be done. I am reasonably sure that you can access a
Jet database for mail-merge without having to use any VBA code.
