Automating numbers

I have a problem. I am constructing a database of eople's names and
addresses for business purposes. This requires all of the people to be
numbered eg:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

But the problem lies here: if I have to ever alter the names, I would have
to alter the numbers, which may require slotting someone in between two
people:
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, (new person),9,10
so the new person would become 9, 9 becomes 10, and 10 becomes 11.

Currently I am only capable of doing this renumbering manually. Is there any
way of automating the renumbering process?

I have a VBA script that will do that automically. I'd be glad to share it
with you. But I must warn you it is for advanced users.
