MONTH TO DATE AND YEAR TO DATE REPORTING

I have a database with a Master table and a Budget table.
The Master table has all the data including these 4 fields (Enccredit,
Encdebit, Credit and Debit) and related to the Budget table.

The Budget table has the 3 fields namely:
Field 1 Category
Field 2 Budget Amt
Field 3 Costcenter Number

All these fields are related to the same fields in the Master table.

How do I create a Month-to-date column and a Year-to-date column.

use a query? BETWEEN DateSerial(Month(SomeDate),1,Year(SomeDate)) AND SomeDate
YTD is same idea, just between Dateserial(1,1,Year(SomeDate)) And Date()
