Access 2002 discontinued?

Apparently Microsoft very recently discontinued Access 2002. I'm unable
to find a copy in the channel anywhere. Did everyone know this was coming?

It happens with every release... Office 2003 (and Access 2003) have been
available for some time (since mid-2003), and the supply of Access 2002
already in the channel may have "dried up". Microsoft rarely, if ever,
supplies two versions of the same product to their distribution channels.

But, as I still, on occasion, see new, shrink-wrap copies of Office / Access
at least back to 97, I'll bet you can find a copy of Access 2002.

Microsoft used to offer a "downgrade" option, in which you purchase a copy
of the current version, and then contact them to get a copy of the previous
version. I don't know if they still offer that.

If I were looking for a leftover copy, I'd start with the online auction
sites, like eBay. Not too long ago, someone reported in a newsgroup that
he'd just purchased a brand new, shrink-wrap copy of Access 2.0 from an
auction site!

MichKa says that it's not actually MS's fault, directly. The vendors
don't have to return the earlier versions, but they seem to think
that no one will buy the older versions. MS does not require them to
send it back, they are acting on their own.

Can't imagine where they are getting the idea that only the latest
and greatest will sell. Surely it has nothing to do with MS's
marketing.

There are a couple of regular computer "sidewalk sales" here in the Dallas
area. Within the last two or three years, I saw some original
still-shrink-wrapped boxes of Access 1.0. I almost bought one, just for
nostalgia's sake. The pipeline doesn't really dry up as fast as one would
think if one just looked at CompUSA, Best Buy, and the like.
