Input mask

I have imported a list of inmates from my jail. Their ID numbers are
a unique string. They all start with 0 (zero) and have 8 numbers.
Example: 00112333 or 01566887 or 05666888. Now that I have imported
them into Access, they show without the zeros. I have tried to tell
the imput mask to do 00000000 but nothing happens.

How do I get access to put enough zeros at the beginning of the string
to make 8 numbers?

Thanks,

Format(number,"00000000")
