Front end comparison

aaj
Hi all

I have Aceess 2000 front end linking to SQLServer 2000 BE.

While developing the backend I work on an offline database. When happy I
update the live one. Any changes I've made to the testone are highlighted by
running some database comparison software that shows all the differencs
between the two. I then manually update the live one.

I am after something similar for the front ends. I need to set up 2
connections, one to the development front end and one to the live front end
and then it generates say a spilt screen showing me the difference between
the forms and code. Does anyone know if such a thing exists

many thanks

Total Access Detective can compare two databases and list the differences.
It's available from FMS. I use it regularly; it's a fine tool but as with
anything like this use it with caution.

Is there any reason why you cannot simply replace the old FE with the new
FE? This is the most common upgrade scenario ...

Thanks for the link, will take a look

I do on most of my front ends, but the test one I'm working on now needs
extra configuration (harcoded paths to harddrives and such), not just the
connection, plus it has bits of code I'm not ready to implement yet but I
have already written.

In this database only, I tend to make my changes/tests on the 'dirty' backup
and then when I'm happy just make the relevant changes to the working front
end and then retest the working front end with the test backup before
finally pointing it to the live backend

thanks again

I know of one specific one, "Total Access Detective" by FMS
(http://www.fmsinc.com/products/detective/index.html). It's pretty
good, although I don't use it anymoe (too cheap :-). I mostly create
my own comparison code to show me differences in table structures and
data, and try to keep meticulous notes.

There was another product that allowed you to work on your local copy,
and when happy, it automatically updated the master based on your
changes and had pretty good reviews. Saw it a few years back but never
looked much into it, so the name evades me at this time. Should I find
it again, I'll post it.
