How to get the most efficient SQL with ODBC

I have an application running on a client PC using linked tables on a
server and linked ODBC tables on a Unix legacy system. One particular
query joins an Access table with 3 ODBC tables. The tables are all
"efficiently" indexed but I have found that to get the quickest
response I must have a selection criteria on the access table even
though I need to select all the records in this table.

Has anyone got any other "rules" about efficient SQL statements that
are not already available in the Access help.
