Data Type text and string one field.

Is it possible to use a text and number in the same field. Currently
the field is formatted as numbers, fieldname credits, this field is
used to indicate the number of credits a person gets from taking a
class. The Administration wants to also include in the same field
letters to indicate if the class has been dropped i.e. I=Incomplete,
DR = Dropped ect... I could format it as text but I need to do some
calculations in a report. Any ideas!!

Why not make the design cleaner and go with two fields, one for number
of credits and one for status? And make the field for status a foreign
key into a status lookup table.

If the two fields need to be presented as one field on a report,
that's a presentation issue, not a data storage issue.
