truncated long filenames using kill etc.

Hi,

I'm trying to find a way to manipulate files with kill, FileCopy, Dir,
etc. The problem is that they are very long filenames, and these
commands are not reliable with pinpointing the exact file if there are
files with very similar names in the directory. I could wildcard them
to death, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a plugin, library,
etc that can handle manipulating long names?
