Error numbers

Just got this out of an error log: (ready with that Courier font:)
ErrorNo ErrroMessage Occurances
----------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------
-2147352567 ODBC--call failed. 6
-2147352567 The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data. 71
-2147352567 Update or CancelUpdate without AddNew or Edit. 12

Now not only is the last one Error 3020, which I already trap, now if I
want to trap this new error number as well I have to check the message
text?

The first one is usually 3146, which when I trap I loop dbengine.errors
to get the error number(s), text(s) from the server.

What is all this minus 2 billion stuff and why can't error numbers be
unique?
