Access 2000 and hard drive access

Hi

A client is installing a new 15000 SCSI hard drive, in addition to a 7200
IDE, on their server, running Terminal Server 2000, and has asked this
question.

Does it make a difference where the OS and Access is installed, versus the
actual database?

In other words, if the OS and Access were installed on the IDE drive and the
database on the SCSI drive, what would we expect to be the difference to
them all installed on the SCSI drive?

It is the difference between reinstalling everything on the SCSI and leaving
the IDE for non-critical data storage, or leaving things as they are and
installing just the database on the SCSI (not my preference). They main
concern here is access time for the database.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Speculating, I would say:
If there is enough memory, the Access application gets loaded into
memory only once, and therefore it doesn't matter where it is.
The database gets accessed repeatedly (especially for writes) and
therefore should be on the fastest drive.
In the course of working with the Access app, the OS is not used a
lot, so it can be on the slower disk.

I would put the OS swap file on the fast disk.

Not a lot I would think. I suspect once the first user has Access loaded into RAM
the OS would rapidly find the msaccess.exe and dlls.

I'd definitely ensure both the FE MDE and, if appropriate, the BE were on the SCSI
hard drive.

Are you having performance problems? Have you read the Access Performance FAQ page
