slow to open forms

This is my first posting so please be gentle

I've been writing access programs for only about a year and may have
bit off more than I can chew but.......

I've written an operations program for work that encompasses simple
workorder entry, purchase orders, vendors and customer lists. My data
is kept in a database on our network and the programs are linked and
sitting seperatly on each workers desktop (about 6 people). When I was
developing the program the different forms would open rather quickly
(even with the database holding the raw data sitting on the network
server in it's current position and the program was sitting on my
desktop) I copied the program into the file on the server to
distribute it to the other workstations. Now the forms are loading
real slow (as much a 2-5 minutes), even the main program that I'm
working on from my desktop. I've broken the main program up into
smaller ones for purchasing and vendor maintanence and such and placed
a main menu offering the different forms at the startup. If you open
one of the smaller programs before the larger Job Specs form, they
open faster (but still very slow) and then the larger program will
open a bit faster. Once you open it the first time, you can close it
down and reopen fairly quickly.

Unfortunately my background is more in the application programming end
and not in the network / server / application arena. The program
itself works great and the people I work with are anxious to use it
but this is a major pain.

I'm sure I haven't begun to give enough information to help you figure
this out (and even if I did, I can only hope you will use simple
enough language that I can figure out how to apply any solutions you
come up with). What else can I fill you in on that might help you help
me.

Is your db properly split ie.e front/end on the workstations and back-end on
the server? If so have you compacted the back-end? You could try
decompiling as well.

I went to the article you recommended and as they recommended placed
my back end database into a shared file instead of where it was and
the program is opening on the client computers much faster. I'll be
watching as everybody starts opening them up and using them to see if
they start to slow down WHILE their being used (we've only had a
problem with slow opening, then they seemed to work fine), but for now
it seems to have helped.
