Well, I agree with that, Steve. I stopped at Access 2000 and was
"satisfied" with it's performance. I just did not expect such a
decline at 2003. I do notice one interesting thing about the
performance: if I perform an action over and over several times (ie:
run the same query , or if I do a sort or filter by selection on any
column), the process does speed up. I can't remember if it stays fast
for the next session or not. I remember reading, years ago, that
Access will "fine tune" or optimize a query once it has been run and
saved. I wonder if there is any of that going on here.

All that - and yes, all versions of Access newer than Access 97 are somewhat
slower than Access 97, regardless of settings, etc.
