Despite many similarities, the object models are sufficiently different that
a significant amount of manual modification is going to be required. That
said, there are a couple of third-party products which are supposed to ease
the task _somewhat_ -- but, according to those who have tried them, do NOT
expect a fully automated conversion. One is described at
http://www.gfminc.com. I haven't used it, and therefore can't recommend for
or against it.

The next question is, however, what do you expect to accomplish by such a
conversion. If you simply want to distribute to users who don't have Access,
for around the same cost, and a significantly smaller time and effort, you
could obtain the Office Developer Edition for Office XP or earlier, or the
Visual Studio Tools for Office 2003 System so you can package your database
with runtime support.

If there's some other reason, clarify and perhaps someone can address the
issue with a less "traumatic" solution than conversion to VB6.

To add to Larry's posting see Convert Access to Visual Basic, Delphi, Java, ASP or

Thanks for the thoughful answers. I have been distributing
applications in Access97 runtime using the Access 97 Developers
software. A number of installations on systems with Access2000 and
higher have had problems and the runtime version will not open. In
these causes I've lucky and was able to provide an Access 2000 mde as
the customers had Access 2000 on their systems.

I am looking at VB as a better method of distribution. I do admit I
haven't tried (or purchased) the an upgraded developers package even
though I have systems with Office 2000 and Office XP

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Secondly, runtime versions create a total installion package of 15mb+
for databases of 3 to 5mb. I'm not sure if VB is more compact but I
would appreciate a smaller download package.

Don't forget that you will still have to distribute Jet and either ADO or
DAO along with it. Even so, the VB package will have a smaller footprint --
how much smaller I couldn't say, but I agree -- particularly since Access
2000, the distribution package is enormous.

Your investment might possibly be better spent on a third-party installer
and SageKey's scripts to avoid the problems. I think some googling on Wise,
InstallShield, and SageKey might be worthwhile. If I recall, the combination
will allow you to avoid the interference with A97 runtime by later versions.

But, others here have much more experience with distributing runtimes than I
do. Most of my clients have had full Office Pro on every desktop to which I
needed to provide databases (and most of them changed everybody to the
latest version at the same time, which eliminated another set of problems).

Don't forget that classic VB's "DLL Hell" was one of the reasons that
Microsoft moved to a different model in .NET. It certainly isn't guaranteed
to solve all your problems.

I'd agree with Larry. It's a *LOT* of work converting Access to a different
environment. And Access has a very nice IDE even compared to VB6. If at all
reasonable use the Sagekey scripts. They've been favourably mentioned many times.
