How do you know it's deleting itself? Perhaps someone or something
else is deleting it?

You have this mixed up. It's the WMD configuration that disappears
spontaneously.

This isn't microsoft, it's a usenet newsgroup. No one cares about your
email address or handle, so don't worry about it. If you think yours is
silly, mine is a mixture of Southpark and Mr Dressup (an old Canadian
children's show). You're getting some funny answers because you're not
giving much information for us to help you.

The message you describe that asks you if you want to delete it the mde:
is it an Access message? in other words, is there "Microsoft Access" or
the name of your Access application in the title bar of the message box?

When does the message appear? Are you in an Access aplication (ie, do
you have Access open) when it occurs?

Also, what is the exact wording of the message?

Possibly buried under desert sand.

Keep digging. (translation: read Tim Marshall's questions and clarify those
issues in a follow-up post to his message).

Keep an eye on it then and when it happens, don't click any buttons
until you write down what the message box says. And please don't be
afraid to post back here with that info and we'll help you out as best
we can.

Aha, that's what's the mystery is about. Compact on close doesn't always work!
Btw: Is this A2k here? I encounter the same issue once in a while.
I guess the prompt is about Access 'thinking' your file is read-only...
The compact is done, but Access is unable to replace the file ... (but *is* able to delete it!)
Look for a db1.mdb or db2.mdb in the directory. Open and rename if this is your 'lost' file.
