access97: step into problem

hello -
i was wondering if anyone could tell me why i cannot
step through this code. if there is "----" in field4,
then go to the next record (numloans = numloans + 1),
and grab the value in field9. why can't i step in?
any thoughts?
thanks in advance. jung.

DoCmd.GoToRecord acForm, "frmUSBCERTUNPR", acGoTo, spot
If Mid(Forms![frmUSBCERTUNPR]![Field4].Value, 2, 4) = "-----" Then
numloans = numloans + 1
totalamount = Forms![frmUSBCERTUNPR]![Field9] & " "
End If

data(numloans, 3) = totalamount

then it populates another table with totalamount.
