Trimming the size of Access Database

I have a Microsoft Access database that is getting to large. I want
to be able to backup old records and remove them from the database.
What is best way to do this?

You could create* a similar database for archiving, link** the tables in
that database, use an Append query to copy the no-longer-needed records to
the archive, then use a Delete query to remove them from the primary
database, after which you Compact*** the primary database.

* create an empty database, and on its File menu, Get External Data, Import,
and choose "Structure Only"
** in the main database, on the File menu, Get External Data, Link
*** in the main database, on the Tools menu, Database Utilities, Compact and
Repair Database

Make sure you haven't neglected to run "Compact Database" from Tools -
Database Utilities.
If using Access 2000 or later, it is called "Compact and Repair".

Access databases grow with use even if the amount of actual data does not
change, due to internal
logs for indexing etc. Compacting can reduce an Access database to 1/10 its
size if compacting
has not been done for a long time.
