Corrupted file A2002 ???

I have a small new, simple db in Access 2002 WinXP running on a network (3
users) and vpn Terminal services (2 users). Just 2 tables Clients and sub
form / table Purchases. This last week we have been pumping in the old paper
files and now suddenly (400th record) the backend shows "Access 2000 file
format" and the Clients table seems to be corrupted. Cannot compact/repair,
cannot export contents to Excel, cannot import the table into a new blank db
either 2000 or 2002, but it still works. Fortunately I have a backup at
record 200 so all is not a complete disaster but I dare not enter any more
data now.

Record locking is set to current record, auto compact on exit is off on
front and backend. There is no code in the be.

How could this happen, is there a fix and how can I prevent it happening
again? Any help VERY welcome.
