Menu Access & Security

I have a problem in that users can't seem to access menu bars created by
a developer in the admins group. Details are as follows:

I'm following the MS Access Secirty FAQ version 2.41 and I can't seem to
find an answer to the following problem in an A97 FE on a Oracle
database (Pretty sure Oracle has nothing to do with this, but thought
I'd mention it).

My users are members of one of three groups (plus there is the admins
group of which the "developer" user is part). I don't assign
permissions at the user level, I do it at the group level. I do all
development logged in as the "Developer" (member of Admins group plus
the other three groups).

However, I have created a menu commandbar and indicated in the start up
window that this menu bar is to display on start up. It displays when
the developer (admins group) logs in, but won't display when other users
from the different groups sign in.

Help, what am I doing wrong?

I forgot to mention that each user is part of a group I've defined, but
are also members of the Users group - the latter group has had database
open/run permission taken away and don't have access to any forms.

Nothing occurs to me immediately.

If a user logs in & does not see the menubar, can he then display it
manually, via View:toolbars:customize (or whatever it is)? It might be worth
trying that, in case an explicit error message is displayed in that case.
Make other temporary changes (if required) to let those users get to those
options.

I assume that you are not >also< manipulating the menubar from code?

No, when the user logs in, the custom menu bars are not visible at all.
8( I tried making the table msyscommandbars available to the different
groups, but this did not help at all.

The main one in question, no. But I do this with the others.

Also, the user can't even see the database window even though I've
specified at start up that the database window is not hidden. I suspect
this problem is related. It's very depressing and I haven't got a clue
what the hell is happening.

Tim,

Do you have any startup or initialization code that changes the startup
properties?

I did actually have something to change the application name so that the
MS Access title bar would change and display the name of the user. But
I've taken that out and am still having problems.

Do your forms have the MenuBar property set to a different menubar? Maybe a
form is opening and showing a blank menubar or a different one.

You might also create a new blank db, then open it and import from your
"problem" file just the Menus and Toolbars (click the Options button on the
Import Objects screen, then deselect Relationships, deselect all other
objects, and click Menus and Toolbars - in case you didn't know how). Then
look at the Menus and Toolbars that came over from your source code file.
Maybe there's a similar menubar name?

What I am suggestion, though, is that you change whatever you have to
change, in order to >let< the user see the normal menu bar & use tools
:customize (or whatever it is). Then log on as one of the users who does not
work, & try to select the bad menubar "manually". If that gave you a
message, "Can not display menubars whose names start with 'P' on a
Thursday", you would go from there...

You know, I think this might have been part of the problem. I've since
gone in and tried so many different things, that I don't know exactly
what it was that made things better.

I have a splash form which I want to display immediately. On the timer
event, I have a long series of subs that fire that check a number of
things, including ODBC connections, is the mdw user represented in a
users table in Oracle and a number of other things. SOmewhere there was
the problem I suspect and a bit of tweaking there along with making sure
all my groups have administer access to the msys tables seemed to do the
trick.

<shrug>

I do appreciate the time you, along with TC, took to help me, thanks.
