Complex Searches

I am writing more complex searches and I would welcome any suggestions
of books on the subject.

Especially, I have in mind the user entering a string, and then the
string being cut up and used against a database. Therefore, the
software needs the ability to intrepret the meaning behind a string.

eg Data Model has PartDesc (there are thousands of parts).

Customer can enter, brand, part desc, cost indicator (eg cheap), etc

eg bath fillers could be a search, and it would return different bath
fillers, but the desc may have different words )(in the db) which
convey the same meaning as bath fillers.
I have heard from some advanced books from search algorithms switch
stem from JAVA code.
Since this is a db group, I hoped someone would know something about
this.
