Making a shaded box to grow

I'm trying to get a report that will have something like the below
layout:

Item # Item Description Quantity Unit $ Total $

~~~~~~~~~~
The Item Description field is set to "can grow = Yes" so that if the
description is long it will wrap to another line.
What I'd like to do is put a shaded box in the columns for Unit_$ and
Total_$. So that the whole column is shaded.
Is there a way to tie in the Unit_$ and Total_$ to the Item
description and if Item Description grows, then Unit and total grow
too?
I tried placing a second Item Description field behind the Unit and
Total fields and shading the background and foreground to the gray
shading I wanted. On screen this works, but when printing to a
laser printer, it still printed the foreground text as black - thus,
overwriting the Unit and Total entries.
I tried grouping the 3 fields together, but this only works for moving
them, and does not seem to help when trying to accomplish what I'm
trying to accomplish.
I think there is a demo called TextHeightWidth.mdb in Stephen Lebans page
which gives the height of a control after it has grown to the correct
height.
Maybe you can set the height of the unit price from this.
Thank you very much for the pointer to Stephen's site, actually he has
something on his page that will create a vertical line through a report -
and essentially that is what I'm trying to do. Somewhere between that and
the text height, I should be able to make this work.
