DoCmd.OutputTo acQuery, using XLS format just hangs

Newbie here, so please bear with me.

I have a module that just hangs. I have tracked it down to this line in
the genMappings() module:

DoCmd.OutputTo acQuery, "Mappings", acFormatXLS, _
"s:\_DataModel\LatestDelivery\Mappings_Rev0_Draft. xls", True, ""

When this line is executed, the Access application hangs. It does
generate the .xls file, but it does not close the file. It acts like it
is waiting on more data. The Task Manager shows the Access application
as "not responding", and the memory and cpu levels are nearly zero used
(i.e. not running out of cpu or memory). Once I kill the application,
the .xls file is invalid.

Here is what I have tried:

1. Execute the "Mappings" query manually - it works fine.

2. Execute the "Mappings" query manually, then manually export to .xls
- it works fine and I get a valid .xls file.

3. Check permissions/space on the output directory - everything is
fine.

4. Changed the format from acFormatXLS to acFormatRTF - a valid RTF
file is created and opened, but the module bombs out later.

5. Toggled the "start" parameter from True to False - this had no
affect, since the .xls file is never completely closed.

Have you seen this problem before? Any suggestions?
