#error and cant compact/repair

I have an access database that I am having some serious problems with.

In one of the Tables some records appear to contain "#error" and
others "#deleted". Also when i then go neaqr a "#error" i get the
dialog box "Not a Valid BookMark" which never goes no matter how many
times you press "OK" which in turn corrupts the db.

Reading the MS Knowledge Base on Trouble shooting on Repair and
Compact - 209137 I need to do just that.

However, when I try to do it the progrss bar gets half way through the
Compact and just halts.

Can anyone shed any light on this
