compacting a linked back-end db

I have a split db and want to allow the user of my application to compact
and repair the back-end db from my app (not go into Access itself). I have
tried to set the connection strings to all my tables to the empty string but
the system still doesn't seem to give up on the fact that the backend
database is still open by someone. Is there some way to ensure I disconnect
all my links to the BE from the front end in order to then open the BE for
compacting? Or should I spawn another small access program and terminate
the main one, leaving the small one to do the compact and then restart the
main program?

Am using Accesss 2k.

Thanks,
Gary.

Hi
You can do this from the frontend. I have a function that do this and it
works great.
What you have to do is to copy the backend to a temp folder (use copy
function in Access 2002 and MKdir) Run a compact function on the COPY of the
backend. Kill the initial backend, and move or copy the compacted copy back
to the initial backend folder, with the same filename.
