Report: How to sum groups that use count function

P: n/a

Hi again all,
I have another reporting question that I was hoping someone could
help me with. I have a report that I have grouped into 3 groups: by
year, by quarter, and by response type. I have also used a count
function to tally the response types.

Basically it looks like this:

1998

Quarter 1

Newspaper 12
Radio 7
TV 29

Quarter 2

Newspaper 16
Radio 15
TV 32

Etc....
So here is my question, how can I tally the individual response types
for the entire year? In other words I want to see all of the
Newspaper responses for 1998, so I want to add all of the quarter
Newspaper totals together to get a Newspaper total for the year. How
can I do this? I tried to use variables in VBA in the Report Format
section, but they kept getting overwritten every time a new record was
processed. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Thanks!!

Depends on how you have the data delivered in the report's
RecordSource. Are there separate ResponseTypes - i.e., columns of
Newspaper, Radio, TV; or, is there a ResponseType column with a code
number or the words "Newspaper," "Radio," "TV"?

If each ResponseType has a separate column you can put a Sum TextBox
in the Year's footer section. E.g.:

TextBox "NewspaperSum"
ControlSource: =Sum([Newspaper])

You could also use the Running Sum property of TextBoxes. For each
Quarter you'd have an inVisible TextBox that is keeping track of the
Visible TextBox that is showing the count for the quarter. The
inVisible TextBox would have it's RunningSum property set to
OverGroup. In the Year footer section you'd have another TextBox that
"receives" the running sum value from the inVisible TextBox.

Sounds complicated - & it is - but it works.

See the Running Sum help topic in the help file.
