Corrupted or Language Problem Access 2000 Database?

My hard drive would not function to bring up Windows 98. I purchased
a new computer using Windows XP. The database files from the old hard
drive were copied into an "old computer files" folder on my new drive.
Many of the databases that I bring up on my new computer show records
on the table and query screen in strange, non English characters. One
of the database files is very normal - showing all records in normal
English. Those database files that have strange characters in the
tables and queries are able to print reports from those tables and
queries in English characters.

How do I fix the database files with strange characters in the tables
and queries so I can read them in English. I have checked the
language key in the reference part of tools and English is the only
permitted language.

I have opened a blank database and imported all of the tables from the
'corrupt' database into it. This has made the problem disappear for me.
Though this work around keeps me and others productive, I have always been
disastified with it. I would rather no the cause of the problem. HTH
