Updating back-end

P: n/a
Hello,

I'm using A2K and would like to update our school back-end server
file.
I've taken a copy of it home because I was having some trouble
updating it at school.

I basically want to add 30 some odd names to the end of a student
list.
Can someone please tell me the steps that I should follow?
When I tried importing the names to the end of the Student table I
received error messages (key violation errors etc.)
Do I need to delete relationships before I add names?

I also would like to add a new field to the table. How can I go about
doing this and then importing data into this new field?

One last question. Assuming I can get this file set up properly
tonight, would I just have to replace the existing back-end file at
school with the new one or would I have do any re-linking?

Thanks in advance! Eric

If it won't let you add the names, then you need to investigate what other
records are required that are causing the problem -- it is unlikely, I
suspect, that it is just happenstance.

If I were you, I think I'd figure out everything I needed to add, create
those records in a copy of the table, then make a backup of the production
backend at the school, then link the tables in the production backend, and
run append queries (in the proper order, so you don't get those messages).

To add a new field, find a time when no users are in the database, make a
backup copy, then open the database, open that table in design view, add the
field, and close it.

If you didn't notice, the main theme here is MAKE A BACKUP before you do
anything. My guess is that, should you make a mistake and take out the
tables, if you can't restore them RIGHT NOW, somebody is going to be more
than a little miffed.

Hi Larry,

Yes I will follow this avenue. I tried it out at home on a copy of
the back-end and it works well (no errors).

To add a new field, find a time when no users are in the database, make a
backup copy, then open the database, open that table in design view, add the
field, and close it.

If you didn't notice, the main theme here is MAKE A BACKUP before you do

I always try to practice safe computing :)
Thanks for your help! Eric
