Not in a datasheet par se, but in a form that looks like one, make all
your data textboxes transparent background, now put a textbox on the
form that spans the entire detail section, use the format menu to
"send to back", make it "WebDings" font, nice and large, about 24pt
will do, either a solid or transparent background will do (if
transparent then you inherit the form's detail section backcolor).
Make the forecolor the colour you want as the alternate background.

Now make the controlsource:

=IIf(<condition>,String(100,"g"),"")

In the WebDings font, "g" is a block character and at 24pt will appear
as solid right the way across the form in your chosen colour and
having sent it to the back with the format menu will create the
illusion of a different coloured background.

Now your only problem will be to come up with a condition that will
determine the alternate record, if you have a reliable sequence number
(not an autonumber) then that mod 2=0 will give you a good condition .
