Access Europe meeting on Wed 5 June - Extended File Properties / Manage Import/Export Data Tasks

The next Access Europe meeting will be on Wednesday 5 June 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by about 19:30 (7.30PM)
The start time is equivalent to 19:00 (7PM) in Central Europe and 10AM in Seattle / PST
Please note that the UK is now on Summer Time (UTC+1). For local times, please check World Time Buddy

In this month's session, I will be demonstrating two free applications:

Extended File Properties
There are currently over 320 extended file properties, though no files will ever contain all of those.
This app provides an easy way of obtaining and storing all the extended properties for an individual file or all files in a selected folder and its subfolders.
This has many possible uses including cataloguing large number of photos or music files and identifying duplicates

Manage Import / Export (IMEX) Data Tasks
Prior to Access 2007, import/export (IMEX) specifications were always saved in 2 system tables: MSysIMEXSpecs / MSysIMEXColumns .
These were only available for text files e.g. CSV.
This approach is still available but was supplemented with a wizard driven XML based system of Import/Export Data Tasks in Access 2007.
The new approach is very simple to use and works for a wider range of files including Excel spreadsheets, Access tables, XML, HTML as well as text files.
However, ease of use has also led to much greater obscurity in how the newer approach works.
This app was created to allow users to view and easily edit the contents of Import/Export Data Tasks and make them a much more useful feature

Hi there! Hope anybody can help. I want to at least read (maybe write) the extended file properties of office documents like winword, excel, .... I've tried two ways till now, one by opening the responding application (this method was to slow for my needs). The other way was using the dsofile.dll from microsoft. With that, first, it seemed to work.

Hello, I'd like to read the extended file properties using C#. Those are e.g. author, subject, ... of a word file or bit rate, artist, duration of a mp3 file. I already tried to use the storage properties provided by OLE, but those only work for Office document. The explorer displays this information but I have no clue to access from C#. Hints and Help are appreciated. Regards, -- David

Does anybody know how to read/write extended file properties such as comments, keywords, author, etc. in VB.NET? I can't find anything anywhere. It may be because I don't know where to start or even what these properties (attached to all files in Windows XP) are called. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Corey Ellsworth

I need to obtain the extended file properties, such as Owner, Title, etc, for a file in a .net program. I have looked through the FileInfo class and I cannot see any methods or properties that will expose this. In the old days we used to use GetFileInfo but I don't see it in .Net anywhere. How can I get this information? Thanks, T

Hi, We are developing a SQL server based asp.net application. As part of requirement we should allow users import/export some relational data through web user interface. We are investigation which file format would be the most efficient format to import export relational data. So far we came up with two options: XML and Access MDB files and we prefer MDB files.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
