I am thinking about switching to windows 7 from Windows XP SP3, but before I do that I was wondering what you guys thought of windows 7. I made the switch to vista business on my desktop about a year after it came out and I bought a laptop with vista premium. After 4 months of constant frustration I uninstalled both OS from their respective machines and switched back to XP. Now I'm considering moving over to windows 7, but I don't want to have the same issue again this time around so I am wondering what you guys think of the new OS.

On a side note "topic: Microsoft Windows / Vista / XP / ME / 95 & 98 " should now include Windows 7.

re: Windows 7 Impressions?

IMHO it's better (than Vista), but still a huge learning curve if you really want to use it (rather than just play with the pretty features). Many of the big problems you expect are not there (eg old apps working), but the simplest stuff - like dragging a link off a window, viewing a file timestamp, installing an earlier version of MS Office, using IPX on the network - just don't work. I'm guessing in time workarounds will come through and I've had some success but it just takes ages and really defeats the purpose of upgrading.

I consider upgrading to Windows 7 was a bit of a mistake, but I'm coming from 2000 for my main machines (95, 98, XP, Vista 32 elsewhere) so couldn't very well justify going to XP on latest greatest hardware. The technical reasons to upgrade to (by that I mean "buy") Vista/7 are very limited (mainly to needing 64 bit - even then I now wonder if XP64 would have been a better idea). Keep in mind I still think XP is overly dumbed down.

Windows 7 certainly does work, very well so far, and device and software compatibility problems haven't been the issue I thought they would be.
