Hi,

recently I tried to install gentoo linux (via graphical installer), but one thing I didn't manage to do is writing the boot device (that one where fdisk -l shows you a * under Boot). could anyone give me a starting point to proceed (I guess grub-install or something similar, but I'm not sure)

thanks

Have you tried booting off of your installation disk? It should have an option to fix an installation and in there you should be able to fix the boot/grub installation.

I haven’t found anything like that. It simply boots into gentoo. the only thing I’ve seen there (besides the live system) is the installation script.

it’s the 2008.0 gentoo liveCD

Ah, live cd, that's why. It defaults to booting into the system so you can play with it. You would probably have to use a regular installation disk instead of a LiveCD.

well, the system is placed on the HD and the only thing remaining is setting up the MBR. How can I see, if I need grub-install or if I just can try grub?

re: installing boot device/MBR

Please bear with me Dormilich as I do not run Gentoo. The last time I did, I had help from a friend who is an aficionado of it.

I would recommend you get into your installed system, possibly using the live CD, and get it mounted. Then, see if the instructions on this page help you with this task.

One bit of credit I must give Gentoo is that there is plenty of documentation for what you need to do, you just need to find it. :) After having it installed at one point, I found it to be quite an amount of work to get it installed, running and configured, yet once it was, it was a SWEET system and ran incredibly well. Once you do get it to where you want it though, you will know a bit of Linux and Administration that you may not have known before. :)

Jeff

Hello,

The link that numberwhun provided is certainly the best way to try to install GRUB/LILO.
Another option is AutoSuperGrubDisk. But using grub-install is better choice (and imo more reliable too).
