Video Surveillance System

What is the best free application to manage a video surveillance system in linux?

I'm making a project in video surveillance systems and i'm currently researching for free aplications for linux and Windows based systems.
Since i dont usually work with linux, maybe here someone have some experience in this camp.

I must admit, I've never used anything like that, but Google gives you a few options. I would recommend to just have a look at the various systems to find out, which one would be best for you.
Of course, it also depends on your distribution a bit - not all distros run all systems. Maybe with a bit of information on that topic, we could help you more easily.
