Simplest way to play audio on OSX

I am really pulling my hair out on this one.
I just want to play short audio files (.wav or mp3) for a program I have written.
I have tried PyAudio with no success, pyglet, with no success.
Why is this such a difficult thing to do in python?
Any help would be appreciated.
