Dear Marios,

Always apache is better than IIS.

To use i windows, download apache binaries.

Or download XAMPP from
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

It has inbuild apache, mysql, php, perl and other addons.

really nice.

Another vote for apache here...I am running a couple intranet servers
with apache 2.0.55 as a service on Windows 2003, and thus far I there
have been zero problems (around 1 year, and Apache upgrades on Windows
were simple in my case). Very happy with performance using PHP5 and
MySQL5 as well.

I'd suggest that since IIS is written exclusively for Windows, and is
able to take advantage of insider knowledge, IIS would be faster.
However that is pure conjecture.

Although, I'm willing to bet the other two replies aren't based on fact
either ;o)

It's perhaps worth benchmarking, although I'm fairly certain that the
speed difference will be so slight as to not effect anything to a level
that is worth being bothered about. Spending that time designing better
code will improve performance far more than the difference between IIS
and Apache.

Thus far, the only real problems I've had with IIS and PHP always trace
back to CGI/FastCGI. When I've used the ISAPI module, I've had
relatively few problems. Of course, all these servers were either devel
servers or low-traffic ones.

I've also had a lot of luck with apache on Windows installed as a
module. Again, relatively low traffic sites again (~3.5G/mo, 21K visits)

Oh, I'd just like to add that I actually use PHP/Apache/Windows for
development and very low load production systems and have had no
trouble. Somehow heavily loaded PHP code running on Windows seems, erm,
dangerous, although I've seen nothing to suggest that... just a
feeling.

But I still reckon that IIS would be faster.... I'll get my coat.

They're both competent web-servers. IIS used to have a lot of security
problems, but that's largely fixed. It also used to be that IIS is much
faster at serving static pages, but nowadays Apache uses low level
calls to send files too. So there really isn't a huge difference.

Personally I like to use Apache just because the text-based
configuration file makes it easier to replicate development settings on
a production server.

Try looking at phpdev, it installs apache 1.3.x and 2.x, mysql, php and a
couple of other things including some forums in a very easy way.

I suspect that you would get the exact opposite answers on an asp newsgroup!

Eh? The ASP guys would say Apache is faster? Go on, I dare you to ask
on an ASP group. You will be evangelised, resistance is futile ;o)

Please refer to the official documentation on that subject:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/platform/windows.html

IIS fans will say that IIS is better, Apache fans will say that Apache is
better. I, being a LAMP guy, prefer Apache for the ease of the installation
and maintenance. I once had to manage a IIS server with several
virtualhosts, and I still have nightmares about that.

If there is even a possibility you might migrate off windows, go with
Apache.

Can you do basic math? Compare the numbers between apache and IIS.
