fetching web pages

hello all,

i'm new to php programming so please excuse if this question has been
answered before.
i need to write a php script that fetch web pages and use proxy
authentication (i use LWP in perl).
anyone can shed some light on where to start (pointers, tutorials,
source code, etc).
a simple example would be great.
