Does anybody have any advice on XAMPP?

i.e. is it any good as an apache, php and mysql installation or does it lack
functionality?

As a one of installation and set-up I have found it easy to install and
begin but I am new to all these areas and wanted to know other peoples
thought. i.e. have I made the right choice or should I have installed and
configured each product...

Thanks

Using it for years now, everything is fine, everything is configureable
like installations of apache,mysql,.. from scratch, so wheres the point
not taking it? Coding takes time enough, dont spend it on configuring
the basics ;)

Nope. It's good. One installer for the whole stuff. And if you upgrade
do it with the Zips as they won't kill your config changes (if I recall
correctly).
