Network Question From a Newbie

I ordered a server with only a single NIC but it hasn't arrived yet. I want to run the internet connection through my server before it goes to the router.

I am planning on using a USB/Ethernet adapter to accomplish this by connecting the internet router through my system NIC. Then connecting the adapter to connect to the system router.

Will this work or do I need t get another NIC? I don't know much about these adapters.

Thanks and I love these forums.

If you have the driver for the USB adapter then there shouldn't be a problem. You will limit you bandwidth to the speed of a USB connection though.

Thank you for the reply Banfa.

The reason that I am doing this is to make sure that I can monitor internet activity on the server.

Is it possible to still monitor the internet activity if I connect the server at the router the same as the clients?

Not really, your best bet would probably be to purchase a second NIC and put it in the server and use the server as a proxy. That way you can have control over the internet and who accesses it. NICs arent super expensive and are easy to install.
