Yes, as I said before, it's possible for anyone to become a network engineer with the right training. The place to start is Net+; you can look over the coursework online and study it yourself, and move from there to any of the free router or firewall solutions offered through sourceforege.net or freshmeat.net.
Specific configurations will vary, and you'll probably want to quickly find a Cisco book or two, but doing that will give you the foundation to pick up a proprietary OS config quickly as you'll map commands to specific ideas.
