Networking a printer across two hubs

I'm a volunteer in Laos trying to help fix an NGOs network. I have the following working...

PC - Hub - PC - Printer

but cannot get PC - hub - hub - PC - Printer working.

I only have them networked as windows XP workgroup, as DHCP ( and internet traffic) is currently handled by a third party machine.

Hoping there is an easy way to get this working.

Try running Network Setup wizard from Control Panel and during the setup, select Share file and printer

This way, windows will automatically setup all the devices related to printer itself

Please post the hardware and software versions of both hubs (manufacturer, model, and software version).

got 3 questions,

have you tried to link the 2 hubs together by cross over cable?


how are you setting up the printer config? (manual IP would be the best solution *Not using DHCP*)


how are you trying to connect the printer in windows printer wiz?

Hi Chunkymoves,

Try to "PING" all those connected nodes. The ping command can be very useful.

There is an easy way. We just have to help yez find it.

Chances are, the two hubs aren't new enough to autonegotiate cable wiring and you need a crossover cable instead of a regular one. Test this by pinging between machines and seeing if the pinging works with 1 hub, the other hub, then both.

If pinging works, make sure both groups are on the same subnet -- on windows, type ipconfig at a DOS prompt and make sure both are in the same network range.

Make sure DHCP isn't causing problems.

Maybe describe your setup in better detail in case you're doing something subtle like plugging one home-grade network access point into another via the WAN port, which could be sticking a bunch of firewall rules in your way (including ones that block printer sharing / SMB traffic).
