Straight cable will have same wire order (by color) at both ends.

Cross-over will have opposite wire order at each ends.

Check the cable by connecting to physical devices and simply give command PING at Command Prompt to check the cable .

Just connect both ends of the cable to the devices and give PING command.

You will need to check the wires if either of the following displays when you Ping:

1) Ping responce time is slow
2) Any of the 4 attemps the Ping command makes doesn't get any responce (Timed out is displayed)

Hope it helps

For checking cross cable the order is little different.
1st end . 1(or-w) 2(or) 3(gr-w) 4(bl) 5(bl-w) 6(gr) 7(br-w) 8(br)
2nd end. 3 6 1 4 5 2 7 8

if you are making many cables you may find it worth while to invest in a cable tester. You can get them as cheap as $10.

There can often be problems with cables that are not visually observable to this is well worth looking into.

check digikey, amazon and other internet retailers, local electronics supply in town etc.

more advances/higher quality testers will of coarse cost more but a cheap one will likely suit your purposes.
