Can't see Vista PC on network, from XP

Hi,

I have 2 PC on my home network. One pc is loaded with Windows XP Pro, the other is loaded with Vista Home.

From my vista pc, I can see the XP pc. I can also tranfer files from my XP to my Vista PC.

From my XP pc, when I go to MAP a Network drive, I see VISTA pc but I CANT see any of the shared drive (And they are shared on VISTA). So I CANT MAP my network drive.

I have Norton Internet Security on VISTA.

I have AVG Internet Suite on XP.

Please Help,

The only way I got this to work for me is to add host entries in the hosts.ini file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

add the ip addresses and machine names.

Here's a possible option that has worked for my boss:

Go to My Network Connections
Right-click Properties
Network card name
Right-click Properties
File and Printer Sharing
check-mark OK.

Type the PC name on your Vista laptop under Start
Run WinKey+R \\Pcname
OK,

Should see notebook, workstation name in a window.

Step one: uninstall Symantec and use a less invasive program, such as Avast (freeware); then enable Windows Firewall

Step two: right click "my computer" on XP, go to properties and rename the network group so it is the same as the Vista machine (default for Vista is "workgroup;" default for XP is "mshome")

Step three: right click the Vista folders you want to share, select "share," then "change sharing permissions;" create "guest" account if none exists and set permission level to "co-owner"

Step four: Go to Vista's "Network & Sharing Center," turn on all options EXCEPT "password protected sharing"

Step five: On XP machine, right click "my computer," select "map network drive," and select the Vista folder you changed above.

That worked for me. Hope this helps.
